Featured Quilter in Sisters

Kristin Shields was the featured quilter this year at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show.

Since she is a member of our group, we wanted to highlight her exhibit.

I started quilting in 2001.  I started with a block of the month at BJ's with my sister and 2 friends.   After class we went to my sister's home to sew It usually took all 4 of us to complete our blocks (we all remembered parts of the demo). 

I started sewing in junior high at school.  My mom and grandmother both sewed alot.   My grandmother also quilted with a ladies group at church.   When she died I inherited two of her quilts, a butterfly quilt and one which was just the top.  I was so excited that my mom and I went to BJ's, when they were on Division, and Crys helped us tie it.   It is still unbound because I want to add my touch to it - rickrack - someday.

My favorite classes:  I have taken several over the years, but my favorite was "Strip Club" at BJ's.  It was a great way to use up a lot of my leftover fabrics.   Just the name made it fun and more important - that is where I met Amy.

Favorite fabric lines: Anything that has flowers

First completed quilt:  Was a log cabin queen size quilt.  I still have it and use it sometimes on my bed.  It is too narrow and way to long!   I made it with a sewing group at church.

What am I working on now:  My challenge quilt for COMQG (just finished the top - now need to decide what to do for the back).  Also working on a snowball scrappy charm quilt and my novel idea quilt for "Snow Child".

I learned to sew from...... my grandma, but I learned to quilt in grad school from a book and a pattern.

 

 

My favorite place to shop is........ QuiltWorks, because of the wonderful ladies in there. However, I do love a good trip to Redmond and Sisters.

 

 

My current project......  I think this means projects.  I have a few.... I just finished with Elizabeth Hartman's Tokyo Subway in a Kayla color scheme.  Also, I am working on a Dear Jane quilt.... which I hope will be finished very soon!

How long have you been quilting:

      I've been sewing for about 7 years.  

Who was your first quilt for:
      My grandma.  She's a quilter, so I knew she

      would appreciate the work that went into it!

I learned to sew from:
      Self taught for the first 6 years or so, then I took

      some quilt classes at local quilt shops that taught

      me so much!  I wish I would have taken a class sooner!

Favorite fabric designer or line of fabric:
      My favorite line that I have seen this year is

      Salt Air by Cosmo Cricket for Moda.

Favorite blog to follow:
      there's so many good blogs out there!  

       My favorites at the moment include Jeni at incolororder.com, and Elizabeth at ohfransson.com 

            Project you are working on now:

I have a bunch of secret christmas presents that I'm working on right now.  In addition to those, I'm working on a bunch of Mod Mosaic blocks (Elizabeth Hartman).  I'm finding that those blocks are a good way to use up scraps and little pieces of fun fabrics.  I am also making a quilt top from the Salt Air fabric line, which I am in love with.

              Favorite place to shop:
It's so hard to choose!  We have so many great shops in Central Oregon.  For that I think we are really, really lucky!

How long have you been quilting: Not long, I finished my first quilt in July of 2011. It took me about a year from start to finish. I did it mostly all on my own, without even knowing what batting and basting meant.

Who was your first quilt for: I used leftover material from my five brides maid's dresses as the centre piece and then did a thick borader of chocolate brown and then a fun green and whit print as the final border. It turned out much nicer than I expected given the size and my lack of knowledge.  It's my wedding quilt for me and sweetie.

I learned to sew from: Kayla, my mother in law, Crys's beginning quilting class and from my mother when I very young. I remember she had an old Singer and would repair our clothing or sew us a costume. She taught me how to hem my skirts and pants and how to sew on a button. She was functional semstress, rather than creative.

Favorite fabric designer or line of fabric: Amy Butler lead me to quilting since I first fell in love with her fabrics and would make bags and odds and ends, and eventually got one of her free quilt patterns online (Thea's Puzzle Quilt), and that's how I fell into quilting. I also love Valorie Wells and and Micheal Miller.

Project you are working on now: Rocket quilt for my son.

Favorite place to shop: Quiltworks, and Stitching Post

Favorite class you have taken: Crys's beginner quilting...haven't taken much.

Favorite thing to make (quilts, bags, hats, etc): I'm into making quilts and kids stuff right now having a two year old in my house. I like making little gifts for people or simple projects that I can get done in a short time since my time to sew is limited.
