Work In Progress Wednesday

Every week we feature some work in progress by a comqg member. Enjoy!

Cindy took a quilting class this fall and made this beautiful table runner. She styled it beautifully for this picture! Beginning Quilt Making --Table Runner was offered at Quiltworks. Quiltworks offers some great classes like this one, and a couple of our members are instructors.

A Novel Idea... Read Together 2014

Every year, the Deschutes Public Library chooses a novel for their Novel Idea.  This year the book is The Dog Stars by Peter Heller. Quilts inspired by the book will be displayed at Quiltworks Gallery during April 2014.

From the library website:
“Dog Stars is a novel that centers around a soulful hero, Hig, as he lives through a grim and frightening post-apocalyptic world and finds his way to hope and love again,” said Novel Idea Project Director Chantal Strobel. “We believe our readers will find much to discuss in this poetic book and are excited to offer it to our communities throughout Deschutes County.”

Meeting Recap

We had such a great time at the Stitchin' Post on Tuesday night. Many of us remarked that we got more chatting/socializing done than sewing: just as it should be!

I remembered to take some pictures during show and tell! Clockwise from top left: Laurie showed her curves quilt top, Erin showed her finished quilt, Christy is doing another Ohio Star quilt for our challenge, since her Ohio Wedding quilt is going off to New York!, and Amber worked on her MQG Riley Blake Challenge using a pattern from Quilting Modern.

We even had a gift certificate door prize courtesy of the generous Stitchin' Post. Thanks!!

Other than upcoming due dates, we discussed future mini workshops/discussions we could have in the upcoming year. Christy's machine binding was one idea, as was the need for a holiday swap next year at this time.

Bring your ideas to our 2014 planning meeting on Tuesday January 7th!

Work In Progress Wednesday

Every week we feature some work in progress by a comqg member. Enjoy!

Amber is working on the Cat Quilt-Along. This fun quilt made up of 25 different patchwork cat blocks created by Elizabeth Hartman. Click here for posts about the quilt along. There's one cat block for each day in December leading up to Christmas. Isn't this a fun project?

COMQG on TV

UPDATE: The program will air today, the 12th. or check out you tube for the video segment:

At one of our Quiltworks November meetings, there was a film crew from myWindow. John and Justin were there filming a piece about quilting for the show. They interviewed Marilyn (Quiltworks owner) and Kayla (COMQG President). They also took a lot of footage of our meeting and us all working on our projects and show and tell. Kayla's interview included her speaking about why quilting is so important to her. It really resonated with all of us as we listened!

The program will air on myWindow on Wednesday, December 18th. Check it out!

myWindow is shown twice a day:

  • weekdays at 4:30pm on KBNZ
  • weekdays at 6:30pm on KOHD

Work in Progress Wednesday

Every week we feature some work in progress by a comqg member. Enjoy!

Ohio Wedding

Christy created this quilt for two challenges: the Double Wedding Ring Challenge hosted by the NYC Mod Quilt Guild and our COMQG Ohio Star Made Modern Challenge. She printed an Ohio Star on a solid fabric, and used this fabric along with other tan fabric (including her favorite beige suiting material!) to make the double wedding rings that fade into solid blocks at the bottom of the quilt. This quilt got many oohs and ahhs when it was shown at show and tell!

Go here to Christy's blog for more information.

And to see this quilt and the others for the Modern category of the DWR Challenge, go to the Metro Mod Quilters website here

UPDATE: Winners for the challenge were announced, and Christy's quilt was chosen as a Judges Choice Winner! Check out their post on the challenge winners for more information.

MQG Member Pins

We are feeling very official!

Since we joined the Modern Quilt Guild as a guild, we received MQG Member pins for each of our members who were registered at the beginning of November.
We will be distributing these at guild meetings, so if you don't have one yet, you'll get one at the next meeting you attend.
For members who had not joined by the beginning of November, you'll get a pin when you pay dues for 2014. Pins will be mailed out early in 2014 for those members.

Quiltworks Exhibit

Please come see our 2 + 1 Challenge exhibit at Quiltworks Gallery during the month of December and January. A reminder about our challenge: we picked charcoal and lime as our two colors, and each quilt could include one other color. Look at all that grey and green in this shot:

We are so excited to see all the challenge quilts hanging together again. While looking at the quilts on Friday night at the opening reception, we realized that the display in the Quiltworks Gallery offers a different perspective on the quilts than the display at the Sisters show. The lighting is different, and it's possible to get up close to see the beautiful details of the quilting and piecing.

For more pictures of the individual quilts, see our post about the Sisters show and the Modern Quilt Guild post.

Quiltworks Quilt Gallery

This month, our 2 + 1 color challenge quilts will be hung as a group exhibit in the Quiltworks Gallery. We first displayed this group exhibit at Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in July 2013. We are so excited to be able to show this group exhibit again!

We invite you to visit our exhibit this month. Even better, plan to attend the First Friday Reception this Friday December 6th from 5pm to 7pm. Exhibitors will be honored, and everyone will enjoy appetizers and beverages.

A Quilt for Baby

We presented Kayla with a quilt for her baby at our meeting last night! Kristin and Erin picked out the fabrics for the blocks and distributed them to the group, and many of us made blocks. Tamra picked out the sashing, and Corni quilted it (stunning!) and also did the binding. It was truly a group effort and it turned out so beautiful.

Kayla just loved it and was so surprised (I still can't believe we kept it a secret!) and she said baby was jumping around in happiness as well.
